Sheikh Jarrah: We Have Lift-off

I am traveling, and so missed the remarkable demonstration in Sheikh Jarrah last night. Official estimates were up to five thousand people, who turned out after the Israeli Supreme Court upheld the right to protest against police efforts to curtail dissent. The court's decision is timely and courageous, given both the atmospherics in the country, and how dangerously the status quo engenders violence in Jerusalem. Read my friend Didi Remez's full report here and here.

I see in the photos only red anarchist/Communist flags and I read in NRG that it was decided to not to display any Israeli flags. Why not? Is that offensive to the Arabs who participated. After all, Bernie, you yourself stated that you attend these demonstrations because you believe that by throwing the Jews out of Shimon HaTzadik (Sheikh Jarrah), you will be able to keep the stolen (as the Arabs see it) Arab property you live on in west Jerusalem. Do think the Arabs view that as a fair trade? Did you ask them?

Do you seriously believe the Jews of Shimon HaTzadik are going to be thrown out of their homes because of some anarchist demonstators? This is the fringe of the fringe of the Israeli political spectrum.
Jerusalem will NOT be divided because the division of Jerusalem means THE DESTRUCTION OF JERUSALEM. You know that, maybe that's what you want. Since the 6-Day War brought the Jews of Israel into renewed contact with Judaism holy places this led to a reawakening of religious feeling in a lot of people. I think you believe that with access to the holy places put into Arab or "neutral" hands, that the inevitable Arab harrassment of Jews going to the Kotel will drive the Jews away from them, which might lead to a retreat of the religious community, whom you keep saying are not "real Israelis" like yourself, but primitive Judeans. IT WON'T HAPPEN and if you want to bring a couple thousand demonstrators to harrass the Jews in Shimon HaTzadik, we can bring ten times as many counter-demonstrators. Or better yet, more Jews to live in Shimon HaTzadik and Judea/Samaria. Dream on.

Bullshit. Its not growing amongst the bolsheviks and the anarachists. They were their from the beginning. It's growing amongst the mainstream. And not because these Israelis who participate love the palestinians. They just hate you more. Now that the supreme court has made it safe for them to express it, they shall.
Enjoy yourself, sparky. I know I will. ;-)

Sheikh Jarrah, March 6, 2010

'...There is a new Left in town!

"..There is a new Left and it is a Left that is not satisfied with peace talks. It is a Left that fights!"

"...There is a new Left that knows there are things you must fight against even when they are identified with the State and even when they enjoy the protection of the law!"

"...There is a new Left that knows that this fight will not be won on paper but on the ground, in the hills, in the vineyards and in the olive groves."

"...There is a new Left that is not afraid of the settlers, even when they descend on it from the hilltops, blindfolded and armed."

"...This Left does not surrender to the police’s political repression, and does not care what they write about it in Maariv. There is a new Left in town!"

"...The new Left joins hands with Palestinians in a cloud of tear gas at Bil’in and gets beaten up together with them by settlers at the South Hebron Mountain."

The new Left is us — all of us!

Everyone who came here tonight. Everyone who dared cross the imaginary line between West and East Jerusalem, despite the threats and intimidation.

"...There is a new Left in town and that Left stands with the people of Sheikh Jarrah tonight and will continue standing with them until justice defeats fanaticism."

"...But there is also a new Right in town.

A Right awash with fanaticism and racism that seduces the masses with nationalist rhetoric."

"...The new Right does not care about the welfare and well-being of human beings. The new Right only cares about ethnic, tribal, Liebermanistic loyalty.

"...The new Right has nothing to offer except for endless war."

"...The new Right is the empty wagon that went off the rails: religious and secular Jews who have nothing but hatred of the other: the Arabs the refugee, the leftist."

"...That new Right manufactures the deluded settlers, because of whom we are demonstrating tonight."

"...Those settlers hate Jerusalem. They do not love the Jewish people and they do not love mankind. They love only themselves."

"...Among the settlers there are many with whom we should speak. But the settlers of Sheikh Jarrah, who sing canticles to Baruch Goldstein — they must be defeated."

"...But we are not afraid of Barkat, nor are we afraid of the settlers, nor are we afraid of Lieberman."

"...We will keep coming to Sheikh Jarrah and to every place where justice is trampled by the forces of occupation and oppression."

"...Look around you. We are not as few as we thought! And we will win!"

This story is making to the New York Times blog "The Lede" and it's about time:

Next maybe a front page article? Certainly especially after the latest poke in the eye upon Biden's visit.

Ah, Ben-David. You're so full of shit, your eyes must be brown. Thats THE LAST thing you want to see and the left knows it. They're are those of good conscience and stout logic that know at the end of the day, we're gonna have to get wet to end this. There will be blood. And it won't be drawn by the clowns and the drum beaters of the left. That will be the job of one of your friends, a psychotic American Jewish shtetller, and it won't be just an Emil Grunzweig this time. It's only a matter of time before a Baruch Goldstein-Yaakov Teiltel-wannabe-American-Jewish-Kahanist parasite shows up at Sheikh Jarrah, with a couple of handguns and a few grenades, kills a dozen or so students, children of the founders, children of academics, and from sabra parents who are both left and right. Then Ben David, then the cat is out of the bag. No amount of distancing or dissembling will help you, Medad, Marzel, Feiglin, Lieberman, Yesha, Netanyahu and the Likud, because once that goes down we'll be able to stick a fork in all of you, because baby, you'll be done. And then finally at the end of it all and trigically only after they're kids have been murdered, will Israel's eyes be open to the cancer that must be excised. Because now the cancer has come for their kids.

Pirate-
I am afraid your diatribe was so incoherent, I don't have any idea what you were trying to say. Wow, you have a lot of rage in you, but that seems to be typical of many of the 'progressives' I see here in cyberspace. Would you care to clarify what you said in terms others can understand?

Potter said...

My take:

To the increasing gathering crowds bring your righteous counter-demonstrators and we will see who starts the mayhem. But regardless, the injustices, the illogic, of the situation will catch more of the world's attention. Judgement will not be kind to Israel, especially after a string of very bad moves ( getting longer almost daily) by the government which already has Israel unable to play to sympathies very much anymore.

I think Y. Ben-David you do not want what you threaten.

Countries don't operate on sympathy, they operated on interests and reality. The truth is that the Arab/Israeli conflict can't be solved because the Arabs don't want it solved. Barak in 2000-1 and Olmert in 2008 offered them everything they wanted in terms of territory. You and I and Bernie know that if the Palestinians were to say "okay, we will forgoe the 'right of return' if you agree to a 100% return to the pre-67 line" ANY Israeli gov't would go along, including a Likud gov't-just as Begin agreed to give every inch of the Sinai to Sadat while removing all the settlements there. But the Arabs refuse to any such terms, and I think all responsible leaders in the world know that, that is the reason even the Europeans not so friendly to Israel won't agree to pushing a UN Security Council resolution ordering Israel out of Judea/Samaria. They know such a move would not solve anything and would lead to another war.

When I called for "counter-demonstrations" I did not mean a confrontation with the Left. I have attended many "right-wing" demonstrations that had 100,000 people or more and there never was violence. It is the Leftist-anarchist demonstrators who are the violent ones in the demonstrations against the construction of the security wall.

Shoded Yam said...

Again, full of shit bozo. Don't give me any of this "incoherent" crap. The point was clear and judging by your pique, well taken. Try some Ex Lax.

Please, please ben david. Try, the Ex Lax, Metamucil, something. You know, its not the size of the asshole that matters, only the amount of shit that comes out of it.

Yes, there were temper tantrums by the right, but these were largely unopposed by the left. This is an entirely new dynamic wherby the left is daring you to do so. You have yet to take the bait. I wonder whats taking you so long? Where are these legions?

What? Building castles in the sky while sitting on the can? While your evacuation efforts are to be applauded, I would advise focusing on the task at hand, as I'm sure there's probably someone waiting to use the bathroom.

In any case, the Europaens have their own demographic problems in which the Muslims happen to be the star performers. The Euroupeans won't agree to ordering Israel out of the territories? That you mention it at all is indicative of the fact that you fear they will. And rightly so. Even if its not true, the european perception is that Israel excacerbates their problems with the continued occupation and oppression of millions of their constituemts brother muslims.

But, Pirate, I know you always deny it, but it is YOU PROGRESSIVESS, like David Grossman, Bernard Avishai who are sitting on stolen Arab land. YOUR FRIENDS ARE DOING IT. You keep denying it but you the problem the Arabs have is not with the "settlers" but the ZIONISTS, including your illustrious ancestors who came to the country to settle it without the permission of the Arabs. Now keep your foul mouth to yourself and look in the mirror if you want to see where the real source of the Arab/Israeli conflict is. Your use of extreme language is merely an attempt to transfer the guilt from your "progressives" selves to what you consider an easier target. Whether or not you like it, as far as the Arabs are concerned, you and I are in the same boat (if indeed you live in Israel which is not clear to me based on earlier comments you made).

"...But, Pirate, I know you always deny it, but it is YOU PROGRESSIVESS, like David Grossman, Bernard Avishai who are sitting on stolen Arab land."

The disingenuity of that assertion has been well established in previous comments, on previous threads. Namely, what was done to secure the nation in 1949 and the circumstances under which these events transpired are not replicated in 2010. While I understand that being a refugee from such middle class hell holes like California or New Jersey and then showing up one day in Israel demanding a free villa (or a home that someone else is already living in) doesn't have quite the same cachet as being a holocaust survivor or an actual chalutz building a country from nothing, such false analogies are symbolic of the intellectual bankruptcy of the shtetller movement and do nothing to buttress their legitimacy.

"...Your use of extreme language is merely an attempt to transfer the guilt from your "progressives" selves to what you consider an easier target."

I didn't make you the "easy" target. You did that by yourself when you decided to salve your shriveled diaspora genatalia with the balm of racism and abuse inflicted upon those you have deemed to be suitable stand-ins for our Nazi friends.

"...Whether or not you like it, as far as the Arabs are concerned, you and I are in the same boat (if indeed you live in Israel which is not clear to me based on earlier comments you made)."

Much like Bernie, I hold dual citizenship. I have interests in Israel, business and otherwise. While I travel back and forth, my stays tend to be only as long as business will allow, and unlike that of the Dr, they tend to be brief. Where do I live? A little place called none of your goddamm business.

Have you ever seen the Hitchcock film; "Lifeboat"? A great flick. There's this scene where they pluck a nazi sailor out of the ocean. Later, when they suspect him of treachery, they throw him overboard. For whom the bell tolls, ben david? It tolls for thee. You're gonna make great shark food.

Nice game of tennis....

Y. B-D.:

“Countries don't operate on sympathy, they operated on interests and reality.”

Most don’t. Israel does. It’s been vital to Israel. Israel needed friends to be born and friends to stay alive. The interests and reality of Israel is to generate goodwill towards itself as a nation, and, by inference, especially, the Jewish people. Israel needs sympathy and is losing it, leaking, day by day.

“The truth is that the Arab/Israeli conflict can't be solved because the Arabs don't want it solved. Barak in 2000-1 and Olmert in 2008 offered them everything they wanted in terms of territory.”

They wanted it solved their way, yes, initially- to get rid of Israel altogether. They did not feel they should be dispossessed for the crimes of the Holocaust. They have a point.

Israeli’s were in love with ‘Greater Israel’- something you conveniently leave out. This intoxication has not sobered up, not nearly enough, not completely, since. There is a real question as to whether Israel wants the conflict solved or would rather maintain a hegemonic status quo damn the consequences, damn international law, damn world opinion, and damn what it is doing to Jews and Israeli society. The RX offered for the tide turning is propaganda, public relations, accusations of anti-semitism, anti-Zionism. There's of course the big card: the Iranian nuclear threat.

But since at least those dates you mention, if not prior, Arabs have been willing to deal.

I understand from your past comments that you are deaf to that- that you have fears that block. But at least understand that Arabs think you and your ilk don’t want it solved.

Your idea of what went on between Barak, Clinton and Arafat in 2000 makes me feel that you swallowed the propaganda and passed on doing the reading about what really went on and what was offered and how real the offer. Ditto regarding that offered by Olmert in 2008 upon leaving office.

Many who think as you do won’t stop mentioning these “generous offers” ie.-of Barak’s, an “evolved” offer, one forced out of him- not what he came with. You offer this as proof that Arabs do not want it solved. But would you have been one of those in the Israeli public that would have voted “yes” in the proposed referendum had Barak the backing needed, had Arafat accepted? I would bet not. Aren’t you happy Arafat said “no” instead of making a counter-offer?

What Arabs don’t want is something less than what is their due- what is fair and in accord with international law and what the rest of the civilized world increasingly wants to see happen.

No- It’s much easier to believe that some Israeli’s on the other hand don’t want to give up their claim to “biblical lands” while they deny other’s their land rights. Or they are just so afraid that they are going to wind up in the sea (as has been drilled into them) to take risks and prefer the risk of hiding behind an increasingly hard to maintain iron wall and being the only ( though undeclared) nuclear power in the neighborhood.
