Lethal Weapon, The Sequel

I cannot be the only reader of this morning's headlines to notice that, almost simultaneously with the Newtown killings, a deranged man on the other side of the planet, in Chengping China, stabbed 22 schoolchildren; or to wonder if there could be a more perfect illustration for why the ubiquity of assault weapons in the U.S. is so scandalous.

Derangement is universal, but the difference between impulsively hurting and impulsively killing is the difference between an automatic handgun and a kitchen knife. Strange, isn't it?, that a country that was founded on the principle that people are too imperfect to be trusted with concentrated power--hence, that they needed the separation of powers at virtually all levels--should not be separated from the power to kill at virtually all times.

Bravo!

This shows how deranged our lawmaking system is. Lawmakers don't do the screamingly obvious because of powerful lobbying, contributions and special interests needed to win and stay in office.

We her from those that this is not about guns but mental illness. Yet we are a people ignorant, ashamed on the personal level when it hits home, generally in denial about mental illness. This is also reflected in our health care system. But to deflect the need for gun control solely to issues about mental health is not to now how so many innocent children could have been killed by one person in a short space of time. The Virginia Tech did not seem to move public opinion about guns either. And I hear that whatever laws have been passed are not funded well enough to enforce.

This is a tailor made issue, a opportunity for Obama to get something done under his leadership in this second term. Michelle should not let him sleep at night.

Sorry about the typos above. Thank you for this post above.

So the mother collected guns, had a mentally ill son that she did not sek help for (it seems from what I have heard so far). The son had 3 guns with him, but it was the assault rifle that did the work.

My mother ( almost 99) and I were reminiscing about summers we spent in Newtown CT when I was six. Idyllic very rural... cows and corn fields. ( I was born not far in Fairfield, during the war). On the news you get the feeling that this is a close community.

I'm stunned by this horrific atrocity, but also bewildered by the culture of guns in the U.S., and the extreme resistance to gun control. What legitimate use does anyone have for an automatic weapon?

As a Canadian, I feel I have a right to weigh in on this issue, becaue we have our gun fetishists up here too, especially in our current Conservative government, as shown by the abolition of the long-gun registry.

Arthur Waskow sent out a post with the heading, "Hey, hey, NRA, how many kids did you kill today?" I'm afraid Rabbi Waskow has it right.

I just received a "White House" e-mail, with the text of Obama's message mourning the kids. The phrase "gun control" did not appear.

In the "reply" page for comments, there was no "Subject" category for "gun control". Economics, Homeland Security, education, civil rights -- those were all present.

I fear that "gun control" has become a political "third rail" of American politics -- touch it, and you're dead.

During the Presidential debates, the question was raised explicitly. After hearing both candidates refuse to deal with the question, I was ready to spoil my ballot. It was a shameful performance by Obama.
